MC is a person who controls crowds, Thats the proper terminology for it, Therfore performing more and having more crowd appeal makes you a better MC. Rapper, Someone who displays aspects that relate to rap - hence rapping.

Rappers = Messangers for the Mainstream Industry
Emcee = Ambassodors for the Hip-hop culture
That would be the difference.. There are some extremely eloquent & intelligent rappers in the industry but none of them can really claim the title of being a TRUE Emcee..
Emcee's that make it into the mainstream's limelight usually end up reverting into Rappers or Dropping back into the underground.
But from listening the lyrics from both Emcees & Rappers there is (most of the time) a major difference in what they talk about and how they go about what they say.. I personally tend to favor Emcees more due to the fact that their lyrics seem to be more intelligent and about shit thats rellivent to real life..
NOTE: Not EVERY underground artist is an Emcee.. There are many rappers in that bracket also.
Thats how I see it and what I've learned from viewing both ends of the spectrum..

I think theres several mainstream artists that can label themselves as bein an MC.. Cause 90% of underground artists refer to topics that da mainstream talks about at one point or another..
For example:
Rapper: Lil Wayne
MC: Common
I think one can be mainstream, but still be an MC

In response to you FAME.. I would only like to point out that I said..
"Emcee's that make it into the mainstream's limelight USUALLY[/u] end up reverting into Rappers or Dropping back into the underground."[/i]
Please take note of the word that has been underlined, capitolized and bolded..
Indeed I would also view Common as an Emcee and Wayne as a Rapper.. But you must realize that their are only a select few on a VERY WIDE[/u] spectrum of Mainstream that can claim the title of "Emcee".. And MOST (not all) of those in the mainstream who do end up just how I said.. Converting themselves into Rappers or Dropping back into the underground where they began..
And thats not due to a lack of talent.. So please.. Don't start that debate.. Because I can name 10 underground Emcees that have way better lyrical & eloquent quality than 90% of the mainstream does..
Again.. Not saying Rappers have no talent.. I just tend to prefer the lyrcal stylings of Emcees..

nice thread....Love this debate LOL
In My Opinion...
Rappers arent necessarily out to make just money...Rappers rap for the hell of it...I Mean its something to them that is there gateway to Fame and Success....Money as well...Rappers do take it serious but they dont necessarily Do it For JUST The People...
Emcees....Is a person Whos set on Lyrically Spreading the Message of whatever message he intends to send....A Rapper usually isnt a person that does tracks like...lets say....Wu-Tang...A Rapper now a days tends to b someone like...Lil Jon....Wu-Tang, Common, Most Def, Talib Kweli, Nas are all perfect Examples of an Emcee....Someone who has their unique style that is out to change peoples opinions on certain subjects and also Maybe open the understanding threw a form of Lyrical Art....An Emcee is probably one to Rap about Government, Wars, Poverty, and Shit we see everyday....A Rapper is probably one to rap about....Chains, Whips, Bigass Rims...and They Grill
IDK...I Mean its hard to put into words because usually people just KNOW that Emcees and Rappers arent The Same....

Plain short! An emcee is a lyricist who talks about problems of today, or other non-commercial subjects! A rapper is an emcee who sold himself out! Plain and simple!

^^^ Not true.
Rapper doesn't have to = Sell Out
Like i said before literrally an emcee is a hypeman, to get the crowd going, in the day's backwhen dj'ing was the main source of entertainment. So in the literal sense an emcee is only a hypeman, and like i said before after dj'ing went into the background the emcee became known as the rapper. So basically everyone save a few old school cats fits into the rapper category.

me too, but i dno. i've jus started to see a difference jus to me, rap = the story telling bit emcee = the entertainer. its like, the emcee does it as a job, he has a skill that he's makin the most of, and the rapper has a message to give, and does it through the music. but seeing as its "rappers" who are out there for the money and the emcees for the art.. im confused now You Summed It Up Fah Me.

I think a rapper, is someone who spits. But the love of the music isn't his main focus. Money is also a real big focus dogs. As for an emcee music is his main focus or usually his only.
