What do you guys consider the difference to be?
for me, the emcee focuses on lyricicsm, while the rapper is the story teller. an emcee is more of a poet, while the rapper jus tells u shit. i dno, any thoughts?

i dont believe there is a difference
about the only thing i have noticed is people who made it call themselves rappers and underground people usually call themselves emcees....but i really think there is no difference

me too, but i dno. i've jus started to see a difference
jus to me, rap = the story telling bit emcee = the entertainer.
its like, the emcee does it as a job, he has a skill that he's makin the most of, and the rapper has a message to give, and does it through the music. but seeing as its "rappers" who are out there for the money and the emcees for the art.. im confused now

i would say its like the debate of
Rap vs. Hip Hop
It's pretty much the same thing
Rap is a part of hip hop, same way rapping is what an emcee does ?

There the same...... mc means master cerimony or sumtin close to that.... all rappers have to be an mc while there on stage.... they have to control and interact with the crowd...atleast the true meaning of the word and original meaning in hiphop

also a good point. +rep however.. all emcees can rap.. not all rappers can emcee...

MC stands for Master of Cerimony...HipHop took this term and put a spin on it for shows...MC'ing the audience with rhymes...
Rappers rap for the sake of it...to get money...to get up out the hood by any means possible...and are meant to entertain people...they're the mainstream artists Emcees write rhymes with meaning behind it...they use 'rap' as a form of art, and convey a message...emcee's dont give a shit about entertainment, because hiphop wasnt created to entertain people, it was made as a message...emcees are mostly found in the underground

this thread is confusing so an emcee points itself to the lyrics and the idea behind his image to change something? like public enemy but what does a rapper do then? rap to make money? is rapper only negative?

good point buuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuut the meaning of MC is as you said, master of ceremonies... an entertainer and theres the (rakim i believe) lyric "MC means to Move the crowd" truee but what i really meant was MC'ing the audience, not as entertainment, but more as spreading the message, or speaking for a purpose....THATS the spin that hiphop put on the term MC...and this MC'ing was used to fight racism and the system and other oppressions in the early days of HipHop...which is exactly what KRS-One was getting at in the quote that Ackshun put from him
