Keep in mind this is my opinion after hearing it once.
Heavy Rotation: Yes, Jay came with something you will have to listen to quite a few times to get it all. Much like the way "Blueprint 2.0" should have sounded, Jay reaches for different sounds, different concepts and a way to say all he wanted to say without going all over the place. The album plays completely through without feeling choppy and no songs seemed to be out of place. I appreciate the lack of emcee collabos and that the joint with Beyonce didn't annoy me. I actually liked it. I would definitely give this album heavy rotation.
Beats: Dre is all over this album and shines brightest on standout track "30 something" and my personal classic Jay-Z joint "minority report" and "lost ones". Justin and the Blazettes put that sigiture sound on this album and shines on "kingdom come" and the opening track following the prelude. The prelude is such a sick track! Neptunes snuck in a nice bounce track...one of the few attempts at radio friendly music.
Lyrical Ability: Jay...or should I say Jordan changed up his game a bit but still is on his way to 3 more rings. The flow is bananas although adjusted. Though a bit subliminal (I expect he'll say names in the future) "dig a hole" and "trouble" was very potent and suggests that these emcees that are selling records still lack the ability to spit a sick 16. Exceptional flow exists on "minority report", "beach chair", "lost ones", "30 something"....not to say the rest lacked at all.
Content: Sure Jay thew in his occasional money and club content but focused more on his life experiences, putting wack emcees in thier place and issues like Cristal and Hurricane Katrina. Considering what most emcees are spitting about these days, Jigga, although not becoming a Common or Kweli no time soon, came with something a bit deeper and refreshing (remember...if skills sold, truth be told....etc).
Overall, the questions everybody had is answered like this. Was it worth the wait? YES. Was it a good return of Jay? YES. Will this help save hip-hop? It's a start, but remains to be seen. It's definitely one of the better albums of 2006. Hip-hop needed an event and amidst all the hooplah and fanfare Jay delivered. *tHE DUDE GOT COLDPLAY ON A JOINT AND IT'S NUTS!*
Be blessed!
